Stem Cell Therapy for Erectile Dysfunction | RejuvStem Cancun
In This Blog

Erectile dysfunction is not one condition with one cause, and treating it as if it were is the most common reason men are disappointed by their first attempt at treatment before ever reaching our Cancun clinic. Stem cell therapy for erectile dysfunction is one option among several, and at RejuvStem in Cancun, it is offered only after a physician has determined which of the underlying causes is actually driving your symptoms.

We want to be direct before anything else. Stem cell therapy for erectile dysfunction is investigational. The American Urological Association classifies intracavernosal stem cell therapy as investigational, not proven, and not FDA-approved. That classification matters more than any marketing claim you will encounter researching this online, and we would rather you understand it clearly than discover it after booking a flight to Cancun.

What Actually Causes Erectile Dysfunction

Five underlying mechanisms account for nearly every case, and they are frequently confused with one another.

Vascular ED. The most common form. Erections depend on rapid, substantial blood flow into the corpora cavernosa, and anything narrowing or stiffening the arteries that supply it — atherosclerosis, hypertension, high cholesterol, smoking — reduces that capacity. This form often precedes a formal cardiovascular diagnosis, since the penile arteries are smaller than the coronary arteries and tend to show restriction first.

Neurogenic ED. Erection begins as a nerve signal traveling from the brain, through the spinal cord, to the cavernous nerves. Diabetes, prostate surgery, spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis can all interrupt that pathway. When the signal itself is disrupted, medication that amplifies blood flow has less to work with.

Metabolic ED. Diabetes deserves its own category because it damages the vascular, neurological and smooth muscle systems simultaneously, which is why diabetic ED often resists treatments that address only one mechanism.

Hormonal ED. Low testosterone affects desire more directly than erectile capacity itself, though severe deficiency can affect both. Thyroid dysfunction and elevated prolactin are less common but straightforward to test for.

Psychogenic ED. Performance anxiety, depression and relationship stress can cause ED on their own, and frequently compound a physical cause that started the problem in the first place.

Our Cancun consultations exist to sort out which of these applies to you, because a treatment aimed at the wrong mechanism wastes time regardless of how sophisticated it is. It is also why this page does not lead with a single recommendation — your mechanism determines what belongs in that conversation, not the reverse.

When Medication Stops Working, or Never Worked

PDE5 inhibitors — sildenafil, tadalafil and similar drugs — amplify a nitric oxide signal that already exists. They do not create blood flow from nothing. If the underlying signal is weak, due to nerve damage, or if the vessels themselves cannot respond, due to vascular disease, amplifying a weak signal produces a weak result.

Men who tell us medication does not work for them fall into a few categories. Some were never properly titrated — at an adequate dose, taken correctly, with enough attempts. Some have a neurogenic or severe vascular cause the medication was never going to address. And some have tried appropriately and genuinely need a different approach. Distinguishing between these is the first thing that happens in a Cancun consultation, not an assumption we start with.

This distinction is also why we ask detailed questions about your experience with PDE5 inhibitors before discussing anything else. A man who took sildenafil twice, at the wrong time, without adequate stimulation, has different information available to him than a man who used it correctly for months without success. Our Cancun physicians want to know which situation you’re actually in.

The Three Conditions We Go Deeper On

Three specific presentations of ED are common enough, and different enough from one another, that we cover them in dedicated detail elsewhere on this site.

Diabetic erectile dysfunction involves three simultaneous forms of damage — vascular, neurological and endothelial — and it is the subset of ED where stem cell research has progressed furthest, though furthest still means early. Diabetic Erectile Dysfunction Treatment — the full mechanism and evidence review

Erectile dysfunction after prostate surgery is caused by cavernous nerve injury rather than vascular disease, follows a recovery window that can extend up to two years, and responds differently to treatment than other forms of ED. Vascular erectile dysfunction is the most common form and the one most closely tied to cardiovascular health, sometimes serving as an early warning sign before a formal diagnosis. Vascular Erectile Dysfunction — evidence and what it may signal about heart health

Comparing Your Options

Established treatments have decades of evidence, and for most men they remain the right starting point before anything discussed at our Cancun clinic. PDE5 inhibitors are first-line and effective for a majority of men when properly prescribed. Intracavernosal injections bypass nerve signaling entirely and work for many men when pills do not. Vacuum erection devices offer a non-pharmacological mechanical option. Penile implants are a definitive surgical solution with high satisfaction rates, generally considered after other options have been exhausted. Testosterone therapy is established for men with diagnosed hormonal deficiency, though it is not a general fix for ED without one.

Shockwave therapy is emerging, with the largest evidence base among the newer regenerative options, best studied in men with mild to moderate vascular ED. PRP injections are classified experimental by the AUA. Stem cell therapy is classified investigational.

On branded protocols. You will encounter GAINSWave®, the P-Shot® and the Priapus Shot® in your research. GAINSWave® is a registered trademark identifying a specific provider network and protocol rather than a unique technology — several manufacturers produce comparable acoustic wave devices. The P-Shot® and Priapus Shot® are registered trademarks of the Cellular Medicine Association describing a specific PRP injection protocol. RejuvStem is not affiliated with, licensed by, or a provider of any of these branded protocols. We mention them only because comparing clinics accurately requires knowing what these names actually refer to.

Where the Evidence Actually Stands

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis in BMC Urology examined stem cell therapy for erectile dysfunction across eleven clinical trials, drawn from more than two thousand records screened. Pooled results showed improvement in IIEF scores — the standard questionnaire used to measure erectile function — and in penile blood flow measures at approximately six months, the longest follow-up available across the included studies, with no major adverse events reported. The authors concluded the approach is promising but that conclusive evidence of efficacy does not yet exist, and called for longer, controlled comparative trials.

The AUA Erectile Dysfunction Guideline, Statement 24, classifies intracavernosal stem cell therapy as investigational (Conditional Recommendation, Evidence Level Grade C). Statement 25 classifies PRP therapy as experimental.

On MUSE cells specifically. Dezawa MuseCells® have registered human clinical trial data in stroke, acute myocardial infarction, spinal cord injury, ALS, dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa, neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and ARDS. Erectile dysfunction is not among them. The only MUSE-specific research relevant to erectile function is a preclinical rat study of cavernous nerve injury — legitimate early science, and not evidence of efficacy in humans.

We offer this therapy at our Cancun clinic, and we are still telling you exactly where the evidence stands — our Cancun physicians will say the same in person.

What Our Consultation Screens For

Every patient goes through a medical consultation before any treatment plan is set. Here is what that consultation is checking for, because it shapes the recommendation you receive.

Whether an underlying condition needs addressing first. Uncontrolled diabetes, undiagnosed cardiovascular disease, untreated depression, or thyroid dysfunction can all be driving your ED, and treating tissue while the cause continues works against you.

Whether a medication is the likely cause. Beta blockers, SSRIs, and other common prescriptions affect erectile function. That conversation belongs with your prescriber, and you should never stop a prescribed medication on your own.

Whether established treatment has been properly tried. A meaningful number of men we speak with were never adequately titrated on a PDE5 inhibitor, or never offered intracavernosal injections. Those options are cheaper and better evidenced, and our Cancun physicians will say so if that applies to you.

Whether your anatomy makes regenerative therapy implausible. If prostate surgery removed the neurovascular bundles entirely, supporting nerve recovery presupposes nerve tissue to recover. Implants and injection therapy have far stronger evidence in that situation.

Whether your expectations match what any treatment can realistically deliver. No treatment restores a much younger man’s baseline function. Setting that expectation accurately, before you commit to anything, is part of what the consultation is for.

Why Patients Travel to Cancun for ED Treatment

Access. Cancun International Airport offers nonstop service from most major US and Canadian cities, and our Cancun facility sits roughly fifteen minutes away, which matters for a condition many men would rather not discuss at length during a multi-leg journey.

A defined regulatory framework. Stem cell therapy is legal in Mexico under COFEPRIS. Clinics in Cancun handling cells and tissues require specific authorizations, and treating physicians must hold a valid cédula profesional, publicly verifiable at cedulaprofesional.sep.gob.mx.

Allogeneic cells. RejuvStem is an authorized partner of MuseCell Innovations® in Mexico. Our Cancun program uses allogeneic MUSE cells — donor-derived and screened, requiring no harvesting procedure from you. We never describe our cells as autologous, and the distinction is not a technicality.

Privacy and thoroughness. Men frequently tell our Cancun team that the consultation was the first time anyone walked them through the actual mechanism behind their ED rather than simply writing a prescription. That is a benefit of the consultation itself, not of any specific therapy, and it is worth knowing you may be able to get a similarly thorough evaluation closer to home.

Logistics and Follow-Up

Practical logistics. Cancun’s tourism infrastructure supports a wide range of accommodation and a largely English-speaking service sector, and our clinical team works in both English and Spanish. International patients make up a substantial share of who we see at our Cancun facility, and many men tell us that matters — a team accustomed to explaining regulatory differences and travel logistics to patients from outside Mexico tends to do it more clearly than one that rarely has to. We do not publish treatment pricing, because a genuine figure depends on your consultation, but we discuss Cancun travel and accommodation costs openly.

The honest drawback. Follow-up after treatment in Cancun happens at a distance. Ask our team for a specific aftercare plan, and keep your own physician informed rather than bypassed.

What a Cancun Consultation for ED Involves

Not a protocol — a general sequence. Specifics are determined individually, not published here.

Before you travel. A remote consultation comes first. Our Cancun physicians review your ED history, what you have already tried and how it went, current medications, and relevant cardiovascular or diabetes history. This is where the underlying mechanism gets identified, and where some men are advised that a conventional treatment they have not tried yet is the more sensible next step.

What to bring. Any prior ED workup, a current medication list, and cardiovascular or diabetes history if relevant. Men who arrive without this get a less precise assessment than they could otherwise receive.

On arrival. In-person evaluation happens at our Cancun facility before anything is finalized, and it can adjust the plan formed remotely if new information comes up. Our Cancun clinic operates within a fully certified private hospital, so any concern during your visit can be addressed immediately.

Afterward. Follow-up happens remotely, and we want your own physician kept in the loop throughout.

What we will not publish here. Session counts, timing, dosages or frequencies — those are individually determined in consultation.

Questions Worth Asking Any Clinic

  • •Have you identified which of the five mechanisms is causing my ED?
  • •Have you asked what I have already tried and how it went?
  • •Is what you are administering allogeneic or autologous?
  • •What published human evidence exists specifically for erectile dysfunction?
  • •What is your regulatory authorization number?
  • •What is the treating physician’s cédula profesional?
  • •What happens if it does not work?

Frequently Asked Questions

Does stem cell therapy work for erectile dysfunction?
It is investigational. A 2025 meta-analysis in BMC Urology found improvement in erectile function scores at around six months across pooled trials, while concluding conclusive efficacy evidence does not yet exist.
Is stem cell therapy for ED FDA approved?
No. The FDA has not approved stem cell therapy for erectile dysfunction. Treatment at our Cancun clinic operates under Mexican COFEPRIS regulation — a different framework, not an equivalent approval.
What’s the difference between vascular and neurogenic ED?
Vascular ED involves reduced blood flow from arterial narrowing. Neurogenic ED involves disruption of the nerve signal that initiates an erection, often from diabetes, surgery or spinal injury. The distinction matters because treatments that improve blood flow don’t necessarily restore a damaged nerve signal.
Why doesn’t Viagra work for me?
Several possible reasons: improper dosing or timing, a neurogenic cause the medication wasn’t designed to address, or a vascular cause severe enough to limit response. Our Cancun physicians work through which applies during consultation.
Should I get my heart checked if I have ED?
Often, yes. Vascular ED can precede a formal cardiovascular diagnosis, since penile arteries tend to narrow before coronary arteries do. Our Cancun team treats new vascular ED as a reason to ask about cardiovascular risk factors.
Are your cells allogeneic or autologous?
Allogeneic — donor-derived and screened, with no harvesting procedure required.
Do you offer the P-Shot® or GAINSWave®?
No. Those are registered trademarks of their respective owners and RejuvStem is not affiliated with, licensed by, or a provider of either.
How much does treatment cost?
Pricing depends on your consultation and plan, so we don’t publish figures that could mislead. We discuss Cancun travel costs openly and provide a personalized quote after assessment.
What if it doesn’t work for me?
Some patients experience no measurable benefit. That’s a genuine possible outcome of an investigational therapy, and our Cancun team discusses it before treatment, not after.
Do I need a consultation before booking travel?
Yes. Every patient goes through a medical consultation before any plan is set, and we require it before you book flights — it’s how the right approach gets determined.
Is RejuvStem’s Cancun clinic accredited?
Our facility operates within a fully certified private hospital under COFEPRIS regulation, with authorization numbers published on this site and physician licenses independently verifiable at Mexico’s public registry.
Can low testosterone alone cause ED?
Severe deficiency can, though low testosterone more often reduces desire than erectile capacity specifically. Testing is straightforward and worth doing if hormonal causes haven’t been ruled out.
Are MUSE cells proven for erectile dysfunction?
No. MUSE cells have registered human trial data in stroke, myocardial infarction, spinal cord injury and other conditions — not erectile dysfunction. The only relevant research is a preclinical animal study.
