What We Use, and What the Evidence Actually Supports
RejuvStem in Cancun works with two distinct cell products: Wharton’s jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSCs) and Dezawa MuseCells®. They are not the same thing, they are supported by different bodies of research, and which one is appropriate depends entirely on the condition being addressed.
This page explains both honestly. That includes where the science is well characterized, where it is preliminary, and where it does not yet exist. Regenerative medicine is a field with real promise and a great deal of overstatement, often on the same webpage, and we would rather you arrive at our Cancun clinic with accurate expectations than impressive ones.
We would rather you arrive at our Cancun clinic with accurate expectations than impressive ones.
Both products used at our Cancun facility are allogeneic — donor-derived and screened, never harvested from the patient. Most regenerative applications remain investigational and are not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. We say so throughout this page rather than in a footnote.
Why Wharton’s Jelly Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Wharton’s jelly is the gelatinous connective tissue inside the umbilical cord, collected with informed consent after full-term healthy births. It is a rich source of mesenchymal stem cells, and it has four properties that make it our preferred source at our Cancun clinic.

How Mesenchymal Stem Cells Are Understood to Work
Current scientific understanding emphasizes paracrine signaling over direct tissue replacement. Rather than becoming large amounts of new tissue, MSCs appear to act primarily by releasing bioactive factors that change the local environment.
Four mechanisms are consistently described in the literature.
Dezawa MuseCells® — What They Are and Where They Have Been Tested
MUSE cells — Multilineage-differentiating Stress Enduring cells — are a distinct subpopulation identified by Professor Mari Dezawa at Tohoku University. They are characterized by unusual stress tolerance, pluripotent-like differentiation capacity, and a low tumorigenic profile in published work.
RejuvStem is an authorized partner of MuseCell Innovations® in Mexico, and our Cancun clinic works with Dezawa MuseCells® under that partnership.
A naming clarification that matters
“MUSE” is also the brand name of an unrelated alprostadil urethral suppository prescribed for erectile dysfunction. The two share nothing but a name. The collision causes genuine confusion, particularly among patients researching sexual wellness applications, so it is worth stating plainly.
Where MUSE cells have registered human clinical trial data
MUSE cells have been studied in registered human clinical trials for stroke, acute myocardial infarction, spinal cord injury, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa, neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, and acute respiratory distress syndrome. That is the list.
Conditions outside it — including sexual wellness indications, most orthopedic applications, aesthetics, and longevity — do not have published human MUSE trial data. Preclinical and mechanistic work exists in several of those areas and is legitimate early science, but animal results in regenerative medicine frequently fail to replicate in humans. We state this directly because the alternative is allowing readers to assume trial data exists where it does not.
How We Classify the Evidence
Regenerative medicine spans conditions with radically different levels of support. Presenting them as uniformly evidenced would be misleading, so here is the framework our Cancun physicians use in consultation.
| Evidence tier | What it means |
|---|---|
| Well characterized | Mechanism documented across laboratory and animal research |
| Emerging | Human trials completed or underway; results encouraging, not definitive |
| Investigational | Studied seriously; not established as standard care |
| Preclinical only | Animal or laboratory data exists; no human trials |
| No published evidence | No human or animal data for this cell type in this condition |
During your consultation in Cancun, our physicians tell you which tier your condition falls into. If it sits at preclinical or no published evidence, you hear that before you decide anything — not afterward. Some patients choose to proceed anyway, having understood the position. That is an informed decision and a legitimate one, and it is fundamentally different from a decision made under an impression we created.
Areas We Work In at Our Cancun Clinic
What We Do Not Claim
A science page should be as clear about limits as about capabilities. Five statements that apply to everything on this page.
Regulation, Laboratory and How to Verify Us
RejuvStem operates in Cancun under COFEPRIS — the Comisión Federal para la Protección contra Riesgos Sanitarios, Mexico’s federal health regulator.
What to ask any clinic, including this one:
A clinic that answers all six directly is a different proposition from one that redirects you to testimonials.
Why We Frame It This Way
Patients researching regenerative medicine are asked to evaluate claims in a field where the underlying science is difficult and the marketing is confident. That is an unfair position to put someone in, particularly when they are unwell and hopeful.
Our position at our Cancun clinic is that you are better served by an accurate picture than a flattering one. A patient who understands their condition sits at the investigational tier, and proceeds anyway with clear expectations, is in a fundamentally stronger position than one who was told the treatment was proven.
This approach costs us bookings. We think it is the only defensible way to operate in this field.
Common Questions
WJ-MSCs are mesenchymal stem cells from umbilical cord Wharton’s jelly. MUSE cells are a distinct stress-tolerant subpopulation with pluripotent-like properties, identified by Professor Mari Dezawa. Different products, different evidence bases. Our Cancun physicians explain which is relevant to your condition during consultation.
Allogeneic — donor-derived and screened. There is no harvesting procedure for you, and cell quality is not limited by your own age or health status. We never describe our cells as autologous.
No. These therapies are not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. Our Cancun clinic operates under Mexican COFEPRIS regulation, which is a different framework rather than an equivalent approval.
Yes, in registered clinical trials for stroke, myocardial infarction, spinal cord injury, ALS, dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa, neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and ARDS. Conditions outside that list do not have published human MUSE trial data.
Donor-derived cells avoid an additional harvesting procedure and are not limited by your age or disease status. Autologous cells are drawn from tissue that may be affected by the same condition being treated.
Yes. Tissue is collected with informed consent after full-term healthy births and harms neither mother nor infant. It avoids the ethical questions surrounding embryonic stem cell research.
No. We do not claim cures for any condition treated at our Cancun clinic, and we would be skeptical of any clinic that does.
That decision belongs entirely with your prescribing physician. We do not advise medication changes, and no clinic should encourage you to reduce prescribed treatment.
Our COFEPRIS registration number is published on this page, and our physicians’ cédula profesional numbers are listed on our team page and verifiable in Mexico’s public professional registry.
Some patients experience no measurable benefit. Our Cancun team discusses that possibility with you before treatment, and no outcome is guaranteed.
