The King Who Paid the Price
Ronnie Coleman is an eight-time Mr. Olympia and one of the greatest bodybuilders who ever lived. “Yeah buddy!” and “Light weight, baby!” became battle cries in gyms around the world.
But the same relentless training that built a legend took a heavy toll. Ronnie has undergone more than a dozen major surgeries on his back, neck and hips, and today he relies on crutches or a wheelchair to get around.
That’s why his decision to come to RejuvStem in Cancún, together with his wife, for Dezawa MuseCells® therapy and the Human Regenerator™ is about far more than recovery. It’s about getting his life back.
A Lifetime of Injuries
Ronnie’s injury story didn’t start on the Olympia stage. It started when he was a teenager, and it grew with every heavy rep.
| When | Injury or surgery | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| Today | Limited mobility | Uses crutches or a wheelchair; can no longer bend or stretch the way he once did |
| After 2007 | 3 hip replacements | Both hips replaced, with one requiring a revision |
| After 2007 | 3 neck procedures | Surgeries on the cervical spine |
| After 2007 | 8 back surgeries | Fusion on nearly every disc; 14 screws, 2 cages and 2 rods placed |
| After 2007 | Hardware failures | Screws broke about four times, each requiring another operation; one surgery lasted 13 hours |
| 1996 | Herniated disc | Injured squatting while preparing for the Arnold Classic; surgery was offered and he declined, and kept competing |
| High school | Back re-injury | Hurt again playing football; began daily chiropractic care |
| Age 17 | First back injury | Sustained in high school |
By most counts, that adds up to 13 to 14 or more major surgeries. More recently, Ronnie has spoken publicly about how stem cell treatment relieved pain from a mid-back herniated disc and “kept me from going under the knife once again.”
The Lower Back: Where It All Began
Ronnie’s back problems go back to age 17, long before his first pro show. A second injury playing high school football had him seeing a chiropractor every day.
The turning point came in 1996. While squatting heavy for the Arnold Classic, he herniated a disc. Doctors recommended surgery. Ronnie said no, and went on to win eight straight Mr. Olympia titles from 1998 to 2005 while competing on that damaged spine. Squatting 800 pounds and deadlifting 800 pounds for reps kept enormous load on discs that were already breaking down.
After he retired, the bill came due. Surgeons operated on nearly every disc in his lower back. The fusions left him with 14 screws, 2 cages and 2 rods holding his spine together.
When the Hardware Failed
The surgeries didn’t go as planned. Ronnie has said the screws broke about four times, and each failure meant going back into the operating room. In one case, he says he turned over in his hospital bed right after surgery and felt the repair give way.
One of those operations lasted 13 hours and reportedly cost about $500,000. Each new surgery meant more scar tissue, more anesthesia and a longer road back.
The Neck
Years of heavy shrugs, presses and carrying massive weight on his shoulders also took a toll on his cervical spine. Ronnie has had three neck procedures, adding another region of fused, stiff and painful joints.
The Hips
His hips gave out as well. Ronnie has had both hips replaced, with three hip replacement surgeries in total. Hip trouble and spinal trouble feed each other: when one hurts, the body compensates, and the other takes more stress.
Life Today
The result is a man who once moved more weight than almost anyone alive and now needs crutches or a wheelchair. “I used to be able to bend over and do all these crazy stretches,” he has said. “I can’t do that no more.”
Yet Ronnie still trains every day. He has never blamed the sport and says he has no regrets. What he wants now is less pain, more mobility and more good years with his family.

Why Ronnie Chose RejuvStem
After decades of surgery after surgery, Ronnie had seen the limits of the operating room. Every procedure fixed one problem and often created another. He wanted an approach that worked with his body’s own repair systems instead of adding more hardware.
- •The only clinic with both. RejuvStem is the only clinic in the world offering Dezawa MuseCells® together with the Human Regenerator™. For someone with damage across his spine, neck and hips, a protocol that works throughout the body made sense.
- •Physician-led care. Every RejuvStem protocol starts with a clinical consultation. Ronnie’s plan was built around his history, not a one-size-fits-all package.
- •A journey for two. Ronnie didn’t come alone. His wife has been by his side through every surgery, every hospital stay and every hard day of rehab, so it was natural that she joined him in Cancún and began her own wellness journey at the same time. Healing together, in a setting built for rest and recovery, turned treatment into something they share.
- •A partner, not just a patient. Ronnie now serves as a RejuvStem brand ambassador and will share his progress with fans along the way.

Rebuilding From the Inside Out
Ronnie’s body doesn’t have one injury. It has decades of them, stacked on top of each other. Fused vertebrae, metal hardware, replaced hips, scar tissue from repeated surgeries and the chronic inflammation that comes with all of it. A single shot into a single joint was never going to be enough.
That’s where RejuvStem’s approach is different. Instead of chasing one problem at a time, his care treats the whole system.
Cells That Find the Damage
Think of Dezawa MuseCells® as a repair crew that already knows the address. When tissue is injured, it sends out a chemical distress signal. MUSE cells are built to pick up that signal and travel to it. Delivered through an IV, they can move through the bloodstream to the areas that are calling for help.
For someone like Ronnie, that matters. His pain doesn’t live in one place. It runs from his neck through his spine to his hips. A therapy that can reach several regions at once fits a body that has been through this much.
MUSE cells were discovered by Professor Mari Dezawa in Japan, and they are rare: about 1–5% of the stem cells found in bone marrow and other tissue. Because they don’t need donor matching, a patient can receive them without the testing and wait that other cell therapies can require. RejuvStem holds the exclusive license for Dezawa MuseCells® in Mexico.
Calming a Body That Has Been on Fire for Years
Every surgery leaves the body in a state of alarm. After more than a dozen of them, Ronnie’s system has lived with inflammation for a long time. Chronic inflammation drains energy, disrupts sleep and keeps pain signals turned up.
The Human Regenerator™ uses cold atmospheric plasma (CAP), an energized gas that works at the cellular level. Sessions are designed to help quiet inflammation, ease oxidative stress, and support better sleep and energy. Rest is when the body does its best repair work, so better sleep supports everything else in the plan.
One Plan, Two Tools
The two therapies play different roles. MUSE cells go after repair. The Human Regenerator helps create a calmer, less inflamed environment for that repair to happen. RejuvStem is the only clinic in the world that offers both together, and every step of Ronnie’s plan was set by a RejuvStem physician after a full clinical consultation.
What Success Looks Like
Ronnie isn’t chasing another Olympia title. Success means everyday wins: less pain getting out of bed, more time on his feet, better sleep, and more energy for his wife and family. He’ll be sharing that progress, honestly and month by month, with the fans who have followed him for decades.
Still Lifting, Still Fighting
Ronnie Coleman never quit on a set, and he isn’t quitting now. His choice to come to RejuvStem with his wife shows that it’s never too late to look for a better path, no matter how many surgeries are behind you.
